The Lion is the first porcelain sculpture from the series Carnival of the Animals. The work is inspired by Le Carnaval des Animaux by French composer Camille Saint-Saëns - a musical suite described by the artist as a “zoological fantasy”.

The cycle consists of fourteen musical miniatures, each dedicated to a different animal. The Lion draws inspiration from the opening composition, The Royal March of the Lion, written for strings and two pianos. The expressive and theatrical character of the music became the starting point for imagining the personality, form, and presence of each creature within the series.

Each sculpture is individually hand-painted by the artist and features a completely unique palette of colours. No two pieces are alike, reflecting the individuality and diversity found in nature.

The sculptures were first presented during a special exhibition in Valencia, Spain, at the workshop and jewelry boutique of Vicente Gracia, one of Spain’s most celebrated jewelry artisans.
